Our Methodology
Last reviewed: May 17, 2026
How we collect, verify, and maintain travel cost data and visa requirement information — documented for transparency and E-E-A-T compliance.
Author & Experience Verification
Our content is created and reviewed by travelers with verified experience:
- First-Hand Travel: Destination guides are written or reviewed by team members who have visited the location
- Author Profiles: All contributors have public author pages with credentials and article history
- Byline Policy: All editorial content includes author attribution
- Experience Disclosure: When content is based on research rather than direct experience, we disclose this
Data Sources
Visa Requirements
Our visa requirement data comes from multiple authoritative sources:
- Official Government Sources: Embassy and consulate websites, official government travel portals
- International Databases: IATA Timatic database, UNWTO travel information systems
- Government APIs: Official visa requirement APIs where available
- Verified Updates: Traveler reports verified against official sources
Travel Cost Data
Our cost estimates are based on:
- Aggregated Traveler Data: Real spending data from verified travelers
- Local Price Databases: Official and verified local price information
- Currency Exchange Rates: Real-time exchange rates from financial data providers
- Seasonal Adjustments: Cost variations by season and travel period
Data Collection Process
Visa Requirements
- Primary Source Collection: We start with official government sources for each country pair
- Cross-Reference: Information is cross-referenced with IATA Timatic and other authoritative databases
- Verification: Our team verifies each entry against multiple sources
- Documentation: Sources are documented for transparency and future updates
Cost Data
- Data Aggregation: We collect cost data from multiple verified sources
- Normalization: Data is normalized to USD and standardized categories
- Validation: Outliers are identified and verified or removed
- Calculation: Averages and ranges are calculated with statistical rigor
Update Frequency
| Data Type | Update Frequency | Priority Updates |
|---|---|---|
| Visa Requirements | Monthly review | Immediate when policy changes detected |
| Cost Data (Major Destinations) | Monthly | Quarterly for all destinations |
| Currency Exchange Rates | Daily | Real-time for calculations |
| Destination Information | Quarterly | As needed for significant changes |
Verification Process
All data undergoes a multi-step verification process:
- Source Verification: Each data point is traced to its source
- Cross-Reference: Information is compared against multiple sources
- Expert Review: Our team reviews data for accuracy and completeness
- Quality Assurance: Automated and manual checks ensure data integrity
Limitations & Disclaimers
Visa Requirements
- Visa requirements can change without notice
- Individual circumstances may affect visa eligibility
- We recommend verifying requirements with official sources before travel
- Processing times and fees are estimates and may vary
Cost Estimates
- Costs are estimates based on average spending patterns
- Individual costs will vary based on travel style, season, and personal preferences
- Exchange rates fluctuate and affect USD conversions
- Prices in destinations may change due to inflation, seasonality, or economic factors
Data Accuracy
We strive for the highest level of accuracy, but travel information is inherently dynamic. We:
- Regularly review and update our data
- Respond quickly to reported errors
- Maintain transparency about our sources and methods
- Encourage users to verify critical information independently
Cost Estimate Formula
Daily and trip totals are derived from category-level inputs (accommodation, food, local transport, activities) normalized to USD using daily exchange rates. For each destination and travel style (budget / mid-range / comfort):
- Collect median values from multiple verified sources and recent traveler reports
- Remove statistical outliers beyond 2.5× the interquartile range unless verified by a second source
- Apply seasonal multipliers where data supports high/low season variation
- Present a range (low–high) rather than a single point estimate
Trip length multiplies daily totals; international flights are excluded unless explicitly stated on a given page.
Visa Data Confidence Levels
Internally we classify visa route data by confidence before display:
- Verified: matches official government or IATA Timatic–aligned sources within the review window
- Provisional: single-source or pending secondary confirmation — shown with cautionary language
- Stale: flagged for re-review when policy change signals are detected
Primary Source Hierarchy
When sources conflict, we prioritize in this order: (1) destination government immigration portals, (2) traveler’s government travel/foreign ministry advisories, (3) IATA Timatic and recognized international databases, (4) embassy/consulate pages, (5) verified traveler reports — never unverified forums alone.
